AT-RISK-PROGRAM

This program is specific to youth within the James T. Strickland Youth Center and Progressive Opportunities in Todays Education (POINTE) Academy alternative school. Providing group services sponsored by Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama, ICU targets behaviors and emotions associated with common-risk factors specific to the population. In attempt to reduce recidivism, a primary goal of this program is attaching youth to resources, providing community outreach services upon release (e.g., Teen Talk), and decreasing behaviors that hinder the ability to attend traditional schools.

BIGGER THAN RAP

Rap Therapy, or Hip-Hop Therapy, can be summarized as the purposeful integration of elements of Hip-Hop culture in a therapeutic setting to achieve catharsis and facilitate psychosocial development. The Bigger than Rap teen program integrates components of Rap Therapy with a hands-on experience deep behind the scenes of creating music. It exposes teens to areas within the music industry that are profitable, but not as competitive as being a music artist. It exposes participants to other avenues such as engineering, producing, music management, and more, while infusing mental health and financial literacy components structured to increase behavioral and social skills. This 9-week program is strategically designed to promote hope and purpose, as these factors have been found through empirical studies to be mediating factors in increasing positive future expectations.
